The Famous Nasi Ohsem
Kenny Rogers’ Nasi Ohsem is a popular dish amongst Malaysians. It’s a delicious combination of steamed rice, crispy fried chicken, and fragrant herbs and spices. The dish is so popular that it even has its own fan page on Facebook!
The Ingredients
You will need the following ingredients to make your own version of Nasi Ohsem:
- 1 large chicken
- 1 small onion, chopped
- 1 teaspoon of garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon of ginger powder
- 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder
- 1 teaspoon of cumin powder
- 1 teaspoon of coriander powder
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- A handful of chopped fresh herbs (cilantro, parsley, mint, etc)
- 2 tablespoons of olive oil
- 2 cups of long-grain white rice
- 4 cups of water
The Method
Start by marinating the chicken with the onion, garlic powder, ginger powder, turmeric powder, cumin powder, coriander powder, salt, pepper, and fresh herbs. Make sure the chicken is evenly coated and set aside for at least an hour.
In a large pot, heat the olive oil and fry the marinated chicken until golden brown and crispy. Once the chicken is cooked through, set aside and keep warm.
In the same pot, add the long-grain white rice and water. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and let the rice simmer until cooked through. Once cooked, fluff the rice with a fork, then set aside and keep warm.
Serving Suggestions
To serve, divide the cooked rice onto four plates and top with the crispy fried chicken. Sprinkle some of the fried herbs and spices on top for an extra kick of flavor. Serve the Nasi Ohsem warm with a side of your favorite Malaysian condiment or sauce.
